How clients can quickly check their tax liabilities
Do you ever get a call from a client upset over the tax they’re liable for? These can be difficult phone calls to have, especially given some of the figures businesses end up paying (we’ll spare you the details). We get it – they’re busy growing their businesses, who’s got time to tot up taxes?
It’s important for clients to realise that you’re an accountant, not a memory card. Sometimes they assume that their tax figures are at the forefront of your mind, ready to pull from thin air. It’s partially understandable, considering the lengths they go to get these figures. What usually happens is that when they call, they get through to reception. The receptionist will most likely then have to speak with a manager. This manager then usually goes looking for a tax specialist, who eventually gets the figures the client was looking for.
So despite your best efforts, it’s a bit of a ridiculous rigmarole to pull up this one figure for one client. Now throw in another ten or twenty clients into the mix – what happens then? While clients like to know where they stand tax-wise, this hamster wheel whirl isn’t sustainable. We recommend putting a process in place that lets clients snap up these figures in a jiffy – no more phone calls, no more hassle.
You want to provide your clients with a streamlined service, so how can you implement a system (that’s not snail-paced) to handle these tax-related queries?
Let your clients check their own tax liabilities
What about letting clients check it for themselves? How, you may ask? Well, depending on the provider, clients can see how much tax they’re liable for in just seconds with practice management software. If it’s cloud-based, all they need is their login details and some decent WiFi and they’re good to go.
By giving clients the option to view this information quickly and easily from anywhere at any time, it gives them more control over their finances. It also gives them the freedom and power to make better budgeting decisions, cutting down on those gut-wrenching surprises. For example, in Bright’s practice management solution, AccountancyManager, clients can see how much tax they’re liable for by popping into their client portal and going to the ‘Tax Liability’ tab. Here’s what it looks like from the menu.

And here’s what it looks like when they click into it in the client portal.
