Traditionally in the world of accounting, choosing new software and migrating across to it was a slow, expensive and painful process. But the influence and incursion of consumer-led technology into accounting, plus the cloud’s increasing role in the space, has made it let’s say marginally easier, and more attractive to switch horses.

Saying that, the last few years have been a bit of a rollercoaster when it comes to software adoption. During Covid, we saw a fair amount of focus on remote working or hybrid working collaboration tools, practice management and workflow software and cloud payroll - all things that were, during lockdown, essential to maintain business as usual.

Recently we’ve seen the shutters go down in terms of innovation as the profession battened down the hatches for the mandation of Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment, and didn’t have either the time or inclination to focus on other areas. However, December's delay to MTD ITSA mandation has eased this pressure and has the potential to let 1,000 practice flowers bloom

Joining AccountingWEB technology editor Tom Herbert are two guests who outline how tech shapes their accountancy practices and what they are looking for in software in the future: Aaron Patrick, director and head of accounting at Boffix, and Dishant Desai, director of operations at 3E’S Accountants.
